Fact 1: Labs Have Double Coats.

Whether Black, Golden or Chocolate, Labs come with double-coats that shed seasonally. Regular grooming helps keep this sporty breed’s coat water-resistant.

Fact 2: Labrador Retrievers Did Not Come From Labrador.

Surprisingly, Labrador Retrievers as we know them today are actually descedended from Newfoundland — a large island in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Canada — not Labrador.

Fact 3: The Original Labrador Died Out in Newfoundland.

A heavy dog tax in Newfoundland — which still exists today! — practically stopped all importation of the dogs in England. With few Labs around, many of the exsiting dogs were bred with other types of retrievers.

Fact 4: Labs Have a Long, Long History.

Pedigrees of the two most influential Labrador Retrievers, known as Peter of Faskally and Flapper, exist from as far back as 1878.

Fact 5: In England, Labs Really Have to Work for Their Fame.

Current ruling in England stands that no Labrador Retrievercan become a show champion unless it also has a working certificate."
